Saturday morning dig

Ft Worth & Dallas Joint Dig @ Glen Rose Tx.

Ft.Worth bonsai club invited the Dallas club on it's dig in Glen Rose ,Tx.
Jacob and I arrived at the dig site Saturday & we were blessed with a beautiful day.

Every where you looked there was an
Ash juniper , Jacob was like a kid in a candy store.

David & Garrett are hard at work
digging up
their up tree.

Whew ! that worked up a sweat,
but that's a nice root ball.
Hopefully with the proper care & a
little luck it will be well worth the
effort.

On every trip you find one tree you just
just gotta have. This was a tree several people
looked at and decided it was too hard to dig out.
It was crevassed between several rocks, but with
a with a crowbar ,a chisel,and a Maddox we were
clear out a space.

We then were able to dig out the root ball. we will show what the results of
our digging trip was as soon as we get
these trees potted up. This was a great day !!!

Winter watering part 2

Winter watering indoors can be challenging also. If you have a greenhouse try to keep it well sealed so no cold air can seep in.
Check your trees often ,do not let them dry out completely.

In addition to white fiberglass panels on the outside (that permit sunlight in) I have plastic sheeting on the inside that acts as a vapor barrier.
Not only does it trap air between the fiberglass but it traps moisture on the inside. When I water it spills on the bricks underneath the trees & the bricks aborsb the moisture.
When the temperature rises that moisture in the bricks is released into the air & droplets are formed on the plastic.

On sunny days the temperature can get pretty warm . I can open the glass on the door & let the heat out thru the screen and not let in any bugs.
you have to keep a eye out for scale, aphids & fungus ; treat for them accordingly.

My bougainvilleas are still in bloom

My azaleas are also in bloom

Ficus is doing great

Ficus nerofolia is doing good

My Brazilian rain tree doing great , waiting for spring to see if my approach graft will take.

Some more nerofolia enjoying the humidity.

When it's cold outside you can go inside your greenhouse and work on your tropicals.......happy bonsaing!!!

January almost gone

WINTER WATERING

Watering your trees in winter
time is just as important as the summer time.

Since it's colder in winter most people think it takes longer between watering cycles. Wrong!!! In winter time you have to consider the sun still can become hot when it hits your pots. The cold winds can also dry out the soil.

I usually put a layer of mulch around my pots to help keep them moist & not dry out so quickly.
Be sure to check them often.

You can use a dormant spray to get rid of overwintering insects & their eggs.

Also you should be on the look out for critters like rats, rabbits & squirrels, they can cause serious damage to your trees.

These are black japanese pines in various stages of needle plucking.
This pine has had it's needles plucked
Check Spelling and thinned out to let the sun into the interior & it's ready for next spring.

As always...........Wax on --- Wax off

Aw,man can we send her back!
Nope, sister has to stay with you
and your MaMa!

Next thing I know--I'm behind
on getting ready for winter!
Didn't this happen last year?
Taking down the shade cloth.

Putting the deciduous trees
down on the ground.

Moving all the tropicals into
the greenhouse.

Winterizing the greenhouse.

That reminds me I want to express my thanks to the
BONSAI BITCHES who helped me
through out the year.

styling a shimpaku

A few weeks ago Adrian
bought a shimpaku juniper
online. He called & wanted
me to style it for him.

I started to work the
interior of the tree & made
a few jinns.

Next I wired some of the
branches

I Then I made a Shari
line up the truck to meet with
some of the jinns.

This is the back view.

This is a another side view.

This is probably the best
front if you eliminate the the
front pad of foliage.

Adrian seems pleased with the
outcome of the tree styling.

Boulevard Cypress

Gabe came by ,wanted to know if I needed some help? Well I had this
boulevard cypress for a couple of yrs. I've wanted to style it, but hadn't
gotten around to it.

So Gabe started to work on the
tree. Pick out the branches you
want to keep & get rid
of the rest.

I want to keep these
branches.......
now what do I do?

Take a sip of that Bud lite Gabe,
it"s hot out here!

Are you serious , you mean
I got to wire
all these branches??
Man I'm going to need
another Bud lite!!

That's a lot of wiring but it was worth it.
Now next spring we will repott this into a
training container...nice job Gabe!!
