Hollywood juniper

This Hollywood juniper has had the roots pruned for the last three yrs. enabling me
to put it in a shallow container. It has had only minor branch pruning & essentially this is it's
1st. styling.









This is the before picture. Good healthy foliage

Se and I picked out the
primary branches then started

to wire.

The tree is wired and has had it's 1st.
styling . It will need a couple of yrs. to fill out.
Further branch pruning will be necessary,
I will update on it's progress later.

Ash Juniper

This Ash Juniper was styled by Roy Nagatoshi in October 2003 in Ft.Worth
and it was raffled off.

It was won by Maria my wife
(dressed in black) and her edict was
"it's my tree don't touch it"













So seven yrs. later after repeated requests
she relented and said we could work on it.

Se and I worked on the tree while his wife
Panda watched












after cutting seven yrs of growth off
and rewiring this is the result.
Updates on this tree's progress will follow.

Sat. a.m. Roy's demo. on a juniper

Dallas Bonsai Society and Ft.Worth Bonsai Society

Saturday morning we're at North Haven Gardens for Roy Nagatoshi's demonstration.
He must be behind that juniper?







I see a hand behind all that foliage













He cut away some branches, I can almost make him out---Maybe he's kind of shy!













Hey! there's Roy he's not shy at all!
After cutting most of the foliage he's working with a pair of jin pliers on the branches












After choosing a front for the tree he sets about styling and wiring the tree














The tree is raffled off and the smiling winner is Bill Tingle, congratulations!!!!










Well I still got 45 minuets left you want me to style that other juniper?

Duh ! What do you think --we can raffle that one also.

















So 15 minuets later minus the foliage















30 minuets later having wired the tree and picked a front it's ready to be raffled of.












Dallas Bonsai Society president Chuck Talley and Roy are ready to have the 2nd raffle of the day.

Sat. afternoon workshop with Roy Nagatoshi

After lunch we came back to North Haven Gardens and Roy proceeded to school
us in the art of Bonsai.

Sun with Roy Nagatoshi at Ft.Worth

Sunday Roy came to the Botanical Gardens in Ft.Worth & conducted a demo. on a
Japanese boxwood for the Ft.Worth Bonsai Society.






Here Roy talks about the growth habits
of the boxwood & how it can grow a dense canopy.













After cutting away a lot of the foliage
he recalled a saying his mentor John Naka had
when styling a tree "you should leave open
spaces for the birds to fly through".
















Roy continues to prune & wire the tree















He has transformed the boxwood into a
beautiful tree shape with plenty of spaces
for the birds to fly through!





The tree was raffled off and the luck winner
was Joe Andrews !

Roy Nagatoshi visits Dallas & Ft. Worth

Well known Bonsai artist Roy Nagatoshi will be in Dallas Saturday at north haven gardens.
Sept. 4th He will be doing a styling demonstration on a Juniper for the Dallas Bonsai Society. It will begin at9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. The public is invited it is free no admission.

In the afternoon 1:00p.m. to 4:00p.m. he will conduct a bring your own tree work shop
the price is $45.00 dollars. Limited to ten participants Dallas & Ft.Worth members only. This is a great opportunity to have Roy help you with your tree!

Roy will also be in Ft.Worth Sunday doing a styling demonstration on an other juniper.
Sept.5 at the Ft.Worth Botanical Gardens from 1:00p.m. to 4:00 p.m. & it is free to the public.

Another recuit and good friend is Randy Harris, he comes by to help out
when ever he can.



He picked up a bonsai for his father
as a gift so they'll have something to do together.

Luis is an enthusiastic learner and soaks
up bonsai. Here he's potting up a kingsville
boxwood.











Luis is a college student in California
he leaves in two weeks but he says he'll be
back next summer. We wish him well! He's
taking his bonsai collection with him, can't
wait to see it next year.
















Gabe & myself are helping Se saw
a large cutting that I planted five years ago.

















Guess we'll have to wait to see what he has in store
for it???

Sorry I haven't been posting to the blog . I been having some
problems with my computer and my camera also, but hopefully that's behind me now.




Earlier this month Gabriel Soto came by my shop and expressed an interest in
learning about bonsai & he said he would be willing to help out around the nursery in
exchange. There's always work around the nursery & I have several helpers who come
by to work and learn about bonsai & form good friendships.







Here's Gabe repotting a bougainvillea he's already
prepared a pot to put it in. He's using a root rake to spread
out the roots.




















After putting a layer of drainage & bonsai soil he's in the process of wiring the tree into the pot with with a pair of pliers.



















He then works the rest of the bonsai soil into the roots & fills the rest of the pot.



















After he finishes the re-potting Gabe thinks about
how he's going to trim & shape the tree.























Once he makes up his mind he methodically
cuts away.






















How's that? he says as he stands by his finished
product. A job well done I say!
